MARIA SPAGNUOLO-CORDOBA
Extension - 256

Hello, my name is Maria Spagnuolo-Cordoba.  I am the Assistant Principal for the instruction of the Social Studies and Foreign Language Departments and the supervision of the Junior class.

New York State mandates that every student successfully complete four years of Social Studies.  The curriculum of Christ the King High School is designed to meet that requirement.  Students are required to take courses in Global /history and Geography, American History, and Government & Economics.  Students are required to pass a regents exam in both sophomore and junior year.  The department offers Advanced Placement courses and electives such as Media Study and Psychology.

The Social Studies department strives to develop a student’s understanding and appreciation of the past as well as enhance awareness of present day issues and encourage them to seek viable solutions to global, national, and community concerns.

Christ the King High School requires that students pass 2 years of the same foreign language for graduation.  The department offers a four year sequence in Spanish, Italian, and American Sign Language.  College level and AP courses are offered in Italian and Spanish.  After completing 3 years of a language, students are eligible to take the Regents exam.  To acquire real competence, it is strongly recommended that students study the language for the longest time possible

Listening and speaking are primary communicative goals in modern language learning.  Along with reading and writing, these four skills are used for the purpose socializing, providing and acquiring information, expressing personal feelings and opinions, and getting others to adopt a course of action.

Effective communication involves meanings that go beyond words and require an understanding of perceptions, folklore, and family and community dynamics.  All of these elements can affect whether and how well a message is received.
